Known by the north Mexican people as chapote. It is a cousin of persimmons and bigger chocolate sapotes but these taste sweeter and juicier. With a dark tasty pulp it can be eaten fresh or made into jams and jellies. Chapote is a beautiful tree of medium height with a smooth white trunk and evergreen foliage. Cold hardy to at least 0 F degrees or zone 7 and can take extreme heat above 110F. Adaptable to dry air or high humidity it can grow almost anywhere. Trees are male or female so youll need at least a few. It’s one of the best wild foods of texas for sure.
