Native to the everglades of florida and found throughout the tropics since the seeds float across oceans. Trees grow naturally in water or very wet soil, and can make a great rootstock for evergreen annonas in wet areas or poor soil types. The pond apple fruit is not bad tasting, its something like a mild pinapple juice. Definately edible. The tree is cold hardy to low 30s.
