Diospyros californica (baja chocolate sapote)

$10.00

A very rare and endemic species, the baja chocolate persimmon has been isolated from the the mainland species (d. Negra) for a very long time. I find this species to be sweeter and more flavorful then some other black sapotes. D. Californica is nearly nonexistent in cultivation but is a very nice tree and fruit. The species also boasts an extremely hard ebony type wood. This tree grows fast (for a persimmon) once in the ground and has handled brief frost in my gardens.. trees are dioecious and require more then one tree for fruit. Typically 60% female to 40% male in nature.
